Three Russian ballets - "Scheherazade" by Rimsky-Korsakov, "The Firebird" and "Petrushka" by Stravinsky, staged by Mikhail Fokine, which conquered Paris at the beginning of the 20th century, were restored by Andris Liepa in 1993 with care and love. Music by great composers, decorations by great artists, wonderful dances are a real treasure of Russian culture. This is by no means a movie about ballet or a video of a dance. This is the mystery of the dance.
The premieres of The Firebird and Scheherazade took place in Paris in 1910. The sets for The Firebird were created by A. Golovin and L. Bakst, the main roles were performed by M. Fokin and T. Karsavina. "Scheherazade" was designed by L. Bakst, I. Rubinstein and V. Nijinsky danced. A year later, the one-act ballet "Petrushka" was shown in Paris (artist A. Benois, in the main roles - V. Nijinsky and T. Karsavina). “... In the spring of 1910 Paris saw Diaghilev's ballet and Diaghilev's opera again, and the Russian season began again. On top of last year's repertoire, Diaghilev brought five novelties: Scheherazade, Firebird, Carnival, Les Orientales and Giselle. (…) “Scheherazade” had a tremendous success and in “Scheherazade”, first and foremost, Bakst. As soon as the curtain went up, thunderous applause was heard at the set. Bakst's sets and costumes for Scheherazade made a splash and overshadowed everything that Diaghilev had shown Paris so far. " Scheherazade shared success with The Firebird. A. Geon wrote enthusiastically about The Firebird: “The Firebird, the fruit of the collaboration of the choreographer, composer and artist (M. Fokin, I. Stravinsky and A. Golovin), is a miracle of the most delightful balance between movements, sounds and forms ". ... As expected, the center of the 1911 season was “Petrushka”, one of the largest (if not the largest) peaks of the entire first period of the Russian ballet, after which the Russian ballet had to either go uphill, or change direction, look for new ways ". Andris Liepa's idea is to restore three famous performances by Mikhail Fokin in great detail and shoot not a video version of the performance, but a feature film that will delight many generations of viewers. To implement his idea, director Liepa invited the best Russian specialists: legendary director of photography Pavel Lebeshev, permanent partner of Nikita Mikhalkov, the Bolshoi Theater Symphony Orchestra and conductor Andrei Chistyakov, sound engineer Vladimir Vinogradov, artists Anatoly and Anna Nezhnykh, and production designer Boris Blank. The costumes and sets by L. Bakst, A. Golovin, A. Benois have been recreated in detail. The presentation of the DVD film-ballet "The Return of the Firebird" took place on December 3, 2003 at the State Kremlin Palace with the participation of the Mariinsky Theater ballet.
